The Witcher 3 Remastered Skill Tree Explained – What Changed in Patch 5.0
Patch 5.0 rebuilt Geralt's progression. How the new skill trees, ranks, connections and passive bonuses work, and what happened to your points.
The Witcher 3 Remastered, the free 5.0 update released on September 29, 2026, is the biggest change to Geralt's progression since launch. The old skill trees were replaced, every spent skill point was refunded, and builds from earlier versions have to be rebuilt. Here is how the new system works and what to keep in mind before you spend your points.
What exactly changed
The key changes at a glance:
- Every skill has three ranks. Each rank costs 1 point, so maxing a skill always costs 3 points.
- Skills are unlocked by connections, not by points spent in the tree. A skill becomes available once you buy at least one rank of any skill connected to it. Every tree has a few starting skills.
- Every rank boosts the tree's passive bonus. Investing in a tree pays off even when a skill never goes into a slot.
- Your points were refunded. The update reset skills on existing saves. Saves, achievements and trophies carry over, but you need to rebuild your character.
Mutations, active skill slots and mutagens are still in the game, but mutations now have their own tree with requirements. We cover them in detail in our mutations guide.
The four trees and their passive bonuses
Every rank you buy raises the passive bonus of its tree. Our calculator adds it up for you, and the values are:
| Tree | Passive bonus per rank |
|---|---|
| Combat | adrenaline point gain +1% (rank I), +2% (II), +3% (III) |
| Signs | stamina regeneration in combat +0.5/s, +1/s, +1.5/s |
| Alchemy | potion duration and bomb damage +2%, +4%, +6% |
| General | vitality gain +1%, +2%, +3% |
There are a few exceptions: Deadly Precision gives no passive bonus, and Cat School Techniques gives a different one than the rest of its tree.
Starting skills
Every tree has a few skills you can take right away, with no requirements:
- Combat: Muscle Memory and Arrow Deflection.
- Signs: one per Sign – Far-reaching Aard, Melt Armor, Sustained Glyphs, Exploding Shield and Delusion.
- Alchemy: Refreshment, Efficiency and Frenzy.
- General: the techniques of six witcher schools – Wolf School Techniques, Cat School Techniques, Bear School Techniques, Griffin School Techniques, Manticore School Techniques and Viper School Techniques.
School techniques depend on the armor you wear, so you will usually pick the one that matches your gear. They all sit in the General tree and open the way to the rest of it.
The most interesting skill changes
Several skills work noticeably differently, and it helps to know them when you plan:
- Muscle Memory boosts fast attacks only after a successful dodge or roll. At rank III it applies to the next three fast attacks.
- Deadly Precision gives a chance that your next strong attack kills an enemy instantly, which strongly favors strong-attack builds.
- Three Strikes rewards chains of the same attack type, while Strength Training empowers a strong attack after fast ones, so you weave attacks on purpose.
- Undying spends adrenaline to restore vitality when it hits zero, once every 30 seconds.
- Signs are about mixing magic with the sword: Supercharged Glyphs damages enemies inside Yrden, Catalyst boosts Aard and Igni there, and Resonance adds Sign intensity to your sword hits.
- Alchemy leans hard into Toxicity and poisons: see High Tolerance, Poison Blades and Toxic Shock.
Every rank description is on the skills list, and you can try any skill in the calculator.
Slots, mutagens and mutations
Only skills that need to be active go into the active skill slots. You have 12 slots in four groups of three, each group with a mutagen slot. A mutagen adds attack power, Sign intensity or vitality, and the bonus grows when the group holds skills of the mutagen's color.
Mutations from the Blood and Wine expansion add up to four extra slots. They only accept skills in the colors of the active mutation. Costs, requirements and the cheapest unlock paths are in our mutations guide.
How to plan a build after the changes
- Decide how you want to fight: sword, Signs or alchemy. That decides which tree you invest in most.
- Pick the school technique that matches your armor.
- Plan your point order before you spend anything. Our guide on what to pick after the skill reset helps here.
- Check the build in the calculator and save the link so you have it at hand while playing.

FAQ
Did the Remaster reset my skills?
Yes. Update 5.0 refunded all skill points on existing saves because the old skills do not fit the new trees. Your save, gear and story progress stay.
How much does a skill cost in the new tree?
Each rank costs 1 point and every skill has three ranks, so a maxed skill costs 3 points.
How do I unlock more skills?
A skill unlocks once you buy at least one rank of any skill connected to it. The total number of points spent in the tree no longer matters.
Are mutations still in the game?
Yes. Blood and Wine mutations stayed and now have a tree with requirements. Researching them costs skill points and greater mutagens.
